About ETU 22

The medieval town of Kamnik, Slovenia, will become home to a diversity of urban gallery and display spaces featuring a diverse selection of contemporary works of art by international artists from various countries and continents. The first edition of Expect the Unexpected (ETU 22) will showcase both well-established and up-and-coming artists, including young talents just emerging from art colleges. The artists will weave stories over various, perhaps sometimes unexpected, locations in the city centre.

The core group of artists, to be shown at ArtKam and Galerija Dika, is associated with Kspaces in Turin, Italy, where most artists now work and live. It also includes artists like world-renowned William Sweetlove and Bart Ramakers from Belgium, and Frédéric Fontenoy from France. The place of honour will be given to Daniele Galliano at the City Hall of Kamnik, one of the most prominent artists to have emerged from the new Italian painting of the early 1990s. ETU 22 will also include a mini-show, Cloudburst, at Galerija Veronika by Victor Kastelic, an American-Italian artist with Slovene ancestry, who, like most others, will be shown in Slovenia for the first time. Another mini-show, Tales of Two Cities, will be displayed at Knjižnica Franceta Balantiča Kamnik, and present book-cover illustrations made for the literary publisher Beletrina by Slovene-British illustrator Andreja Brulc.

The exhibition aims to use contemporary art as a looking-glass, as a means of creating a playful interaction between the works of art and the life and culture of the historic city centre. The usual way of viewing linear art history, and the selection of art for the consumers of culture in an institutionalised setting by the trends and tastes of curators, art collectors and evaluators, presents many challenges in showing contemporary works of art to a broader audience who are not part of this traditional narrative. The idea of seeing contemporary art differently, as well as presenting a group show in new, multiple and “unexpected” spaces, comes at a time in our history in which we, viewers and consumers, should evaluate our heritage to determine who we are now and where we are heading in the future.
